Those Orange-and-Black Greek Vases Were Never Painted Black

The black on an Athenian vase is not paint, ink or glaze. It is the same iron that makes the orange, flipped by three turns of the kiln vents.

Stand in front of a Greek vase in a museum and your eye does the obvious thing. Orange pot, black paint, very steady brushwork. Two of those three guesses are wrong. Nobody painted the black on, and nobody glazed it either. There is no pigment in it, no ink, no coat of glass. The black and the orange are the same iron, in clay dug from the same corner of Greece. What separated them was fire, and a potter's hand on the kiln vents.

One fire, three turns of the vents

It all happens in one firing. First the vents stay open and air pours in. The kiln climbs to somewhere around 900 to 950 degrees Celsius, near 1,700 Fahrenheit. Iron in the clay takes on oxygen and becomes hematite, a red mineral, so the pot and the painted areas both go rusty orange. Then the potter shuts the vents and feeds in green wood. Damp wood burns badly, and bad burning makes carbon monoxide, a gas that is short on oxygen and takes it from whatever is close by.

Red hematite becomes black magnetite, and the whole vase goes black. Now the vents open again while the kiln cools, and oxygen floods back in. The bare clay turns orange a second time, because it stayed a little porous and air can work its way into it. The painted areas cannot follow. During the smoky phase that thin coat had already sintered, meaning its particles fused together into a sealed, glassy skin. Oxygen has no way in. The black is locked behind a door that shut at the hottest moment of the firing.

Two clays, not one

The black is not the pot's own clay thinned down. It is a closely related local clay, refined much finer, rich in iron and illite and holding under about 1 percent calcium oxide. The vase body carries more than 5 percent.

Black-figure and red-figure share one recipe

School books treat black-figure and red-figure as two different technologies. Chemically they are one technology. Same slip, same three-part fire, same iron doing the same two things. The only real difference is where the brush goes. In black-figure the figures are filled in with slip and the background is left bare, so the figures come out black. In red-figure the painter floods the background with slip and leaves the figures bare, so the figures come out orange.

The switch shows up in the drawing, not the chemistry. A black-figure artist had to scratch details through the dried slip with a metal point, one thin line at a time, to get a knee or an eye. A red-figure artist could brush those lines on instead. It is easier, and it bends. Athens made the change around 530 BCE, and the figures on its pots suddenly learned how to twist, lean and look sideways. Both styles came out of the same workshops, sometimes from the same painter.

Nobody wrote the recipe down

Here is the part that catches people. No text from antiquity describes any of this. Not a manual, not a letter, not a line from a Roman naturalist. The three-phase sequence is a modern reconstruction, worked out over decades by potters and scientists who fired test tiles, cut them open, and looked at what the iron had done inside. The details are still argued over. Sources disagree on the exact temperatures, and even on whether the kiln got hotter or cooler during the smoky phase.

Some of the arguing goes further than numbers. A vase attributed to the Berlin Painter, now at the Getty, has layers that one three-part firing cannot explain; the replication work pointed to several firings with fresh painting in between. That messiness is familiar to anyone who fires pots today. Two pots loaded into the same kiln an inch apart can come out different. The kiln is still the step nobody fully controls.

Firing is the one part of a pottery class you never get to watch. In a two-hour drop-in session in New York, Chicago or Miami you shape the pot; the kiln takes it from there, and it comes back a different colour than you left it.
